If the title doesn’t get you interested, I don’t know what will. We had our first experience with illness Thursday into Friday. We were going to bed on Thursday, Tiffany was in the other room pumping and I was laying in bed with Natalie next to the bed in the bassinet. She was making her usual going to bed sounds, stretching, yawning etc..., but then I heard something a little more different.
When I went to check, it looked like she had thrown up, not unusual, so we changed her clothes and went to bed. In the morning, Tiffany mentioned that she had done it again during the night and she had done it again before I left for work Friday morning. We were changing her diaper and while on her back, here comes the milk she just ate launching out of her mouth.
It didn’t seem to upset Natalie and she was still producing plenty of diapers so I wasn’t too concerned. Later that morning I get a call from Tiffany saying they are on the way to the emergency room. Knowing what was going on, again I was concerned, but not worried. I asked Tiffany if she had tried calling the pediatrician. She said she called twice and couldn’t get through to talk to someone so her mom had called a friend at one of the hospitals she works at and he advised Natalie be brought in to be checked out.
This hospital is about a 20 minute drive from the house and specializes in pediatric emergencies. I left work and met Tiffany and everyone else there. After an ultrasound and a lookover, it was determined we could go home. She ate before we left without throwing up and was still producing dirty diapers so the doctor said it could be reflux, which we thought she might have anyway because she has the hiccups quite often. So I thought that they might give us something for the reflux. No dice, the doctor said he doesn’t advise that unless they can’t keep anything down. Anyway, we came home and there wasn’t a problem the rest of the day.
Yesterday, Tiffany had some shopping to do so I was on baby watch by myself for the first time. Tiffany fed her and left leaving Natalie asleep in the bassinet as she left. We cruised through the first hour with Natalie asleep, but when I heard her stirring around and went to check on her, there was vomit all over her shirt.
This was not the same though, so I was not worried for her health, just disappointed I needed to change her outfit. I knew it was different because it was all around her mouth and the neckline of her shirt so it was clearly not projectile. Plus, it smelled REALLY bad. This milk had clearly made it to her stomach, whereas it was not on Friday because it didn’t smell at all. The smell could be best described as curdled milk and not only her clothes smelled like it but her baby breath too.
Anyway, I took her and headed to the nursery. She had obviously kept something down because she had one full diaper! She was also wearing pants which makes changing her such a hassle because she is always moving her legs. Natalie does not enjoy getting her diaper changed. I left the pants because they were clean and just changed her shirt. By the time this was all done, I could tell she was hungry and I heated up a bottle in our bottle warmer up dohicky and fed her. She ate about a half ounce, not a lot for her, but seemed content and I put her in her swing in the study and I went back to work. Tiffany returned shortly thereafter, crisis averted, and the milk has stayed down since.
